Steps on how to grow Basil:
- The plant grows well in summer, loves moisture and plenty of good sunlight.
- It can be grown outdoors in the ground or container.
- If growing from seeds, scatter them on the ground or container. Lightly cover with soil.
- Starter plants can be purchased at the local nurseries or Asian stores. Plant them directly in the ground or container with proper drainage holes.
- Water everyday and fertilizer once in 4 weeks.
- Prune the plant by pinching the top leaves to get more growth. The more you harvest, the faster the leaves will grow.
- Remove any flowers that will form into seeds as the leaves start to lose its aroma. Once the flowers are removed, the leaves will get back their aroma.
- The plant does not grow in winter. Towards the end of summer, you could let the flowers bloom to collect seeds to grow basil next summer.
- Basil leaves can be dried or frozen.
