Satisfy your chocolate cravings with a batch of these delicious one bowl brownies. Easy to make, ready in an hour, perfect for potlucks, parties, social gatherings and more. A brownie is a square or rectangular baked confection, which is either fudgy, cakey or chewy. Named after its dark brown colour. It may include nuts, chocolate chips, caramel, frosting, cream cheese or other ingredients. Unlike cakes, the brownie batter is not leavened with baking powder. Hence, brownies are dense and heavy, classified as a bar cookie rather than a cake. Served with whipped cream or ice-cream, they are sinfully delicious.
Born in U.S.A., the first printed recipe of brownie appeared in the 20th century. Popular in cafes and coffee shops, there are various legends as to its origin. One is of Fannie Farmer, an American culinary expert who adapted her chocolate cookie recipe and baked it in a rectangular pan. Another myth states that a chef mistakenly added melted chocolate to a batch of biscuits. Then, a cook made a cake and did not have enough flour. Some say a housewife prepared a chocolate cake, but forgot to add baking powder. Anyway, this common homemade treat can be mastered at home with these tips. First, line the baking pan with parchment paper and grease it. Melt chocolate with butter preventing it from scorching or ruining its flavour. Avoid overmixing the batter and incorporating too much air. Finally, do not overbake and dry them out. The richness from the chocolate complemented with the sweetness from the sugar and moist texture is loved by all.
