Steps on how to grow Mint:
- Mint is a perennial plant that will provide a fresh harvest for years. It does not germinate or sprout well with seed so it is ideal to start from seedlings or cuttings. To start from a cutting, place a piece of stem in a glass of normal water until it sprouts roots. This can be done using healthy fresh mint from the grocery store.
- The plant spreads uncontrollably so grow either in a well-drained container or maintain a certain area outdoors using garden trim or stones for growing mint. This will confine the roots from spreading.
- Initially, water the plant frequently. When roots are large enough, the plant needs watering during very dry weather.
- To harvest mint, pick few fresh leaves when required. Do not take more than one-third of the leaves from a plant. Allow it to regrow before harvesting again.
- It thrives in severe weather conditions but winter kills the plant. Next spring, the roots will sprout again.
- The mint leaves stay fresh in the fridge for 3 to 5 days. Then they start to wilt. The leaves can be frozen. Dried mint is best for longer storage. Use a dehydrator or oven set on low. Store dried mint in an air-tight container which will keep up to a year or longer.
