This classic is an American variation on a "loose meat" sandwich consisting of ground beef cooked in a sauce and spooned onto toasted hamburger buns. The filling heaped and dripping out of the bun during consumption. Ground beef can be substituted with chicken, turkey, lamb or choice of meat, which can be made ahead, refrigerated and reheated just before use. Sloppy joes are easy and inexpensive to make, a favourite of young and old. Served with potato wedges, caesar salad or coleslaw.
The ground meat is cooked in a skillet, then sauteed with onion, garlic and green chillies. Addition of tomato paste and puree, Worcestershire sauce with other seasonings flavour the meat. A generous mound of the succulent filling is spread on hamburger buns and topped with shredded cheese. Tempting, irresistible and mouthwateringly delicious.
